Member for Cook David Kempton has welcomed the Crisafulli Government’s $245 million commitment to building a new Barron River Bridge—delivering safer, stronger and more reliable connectivity between Cairns and the Tablelands.
Announced today by the Minister today ahead of the Government’s first budget next week, the investment matches the Australian Government’s funding commitment of $245m and ensures the long-awaited project will finally become a reality.
“This is a game-changer for Far North Queensland,” Mr Kempton said.
“This vital piece of infrastructure neglected by Labor for a decade will finally be replaced proving the Crisafulli Government is listening, acting and delivering for our communities.
“This bridge is a vital link—whether it’s for students accessing education, patients getting to medical appointments, freight and goods moving efficiently, or tourists exploring our unique region. Its benefits will be widely felt and long-lasting.”
The current bridge will remain open during construction and once the repairs to the Kuranda range are complete in 2026 the commuters and travellers can expect more reliability when traversing the range.
The new bridge will be built downstream of the existing structure and include a dedicated pedestrian and cycling path, improved safety features, and a turnaround facility on the Kennedy Highway.
With construction expected to support around 150 jobs over the project’s life, Mr Kempton said the bridge is also a much-needed economic boost.
“This project is about jobs, safety, and confidence in the future of the Far North,” he said.
Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said the project was part of the Kuranda
“After a decade of Labor neglect, we are delivering the infrastructure Far North Queenslanders deserve,” Minister Mickelberg said.
