David Kempton Member for Cook said the Crisafulli Government is delivering easier access to lifesaving care closer to home, with new telehealth technology allowing surgical specialists to be virtually present inside the operating theatre, during emergencies, at Thursday Island Hospital.

A specialised high-definition camera, integrated directly into the operating theatre light fixture, enables specialists in fields such as obstetrics and general surgery to see procedures clearly and provide immediate clinical advice to support local teams.

Mr Kempton said he was committed to ensuring the people of the Torres Strait could access world-class healthcare.

“This technology strengthens the capability of our highly skilled Rural Generalists, giving them instant access to specialist support during critical moments and helping restore health services locals can rely on when they need them most,” Mr Kempton said.

“No matter where you live in Queensland, you deserve access to safe, high-quality healthcare, and this innovation ensures patients in the Torres can receive expert care without leaving their community, wherever possible.”

Thursday Island Senior Medical Officer Dr Jake Parker said the technology would be invaluable in emergency situations.

“Having instant access to specialist advice during surgery provides an extra layer of support and confidence for our team, particularly in complex or unexpected situations,” Dr Parker said.

“This technology will help us continue delivering safe, high-quality care locally, while reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for treatment.”

Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service Chief Executive Rex O’Rourke said the innovation enhanced clinical safety and strengthened care delivery in the region.

“Our Rural Generalists are highly skilled clinicians, and this technology gives them immediate access to specialist expertise when it matters most,” Mr O’Rourke said.

“It enhances patient safety, supports our clinical teams, and helps ensure more patients can receive care locally rather than being transferred away from their community.”
