David Kempton Member for Cook would like to confirm after months of work behind the scenes a new post office on Thursday Island has officially opened on Monday 30 March.
Understanding the importance of mail services for Thursday Island, Mr Kempton provided support to assist with aspects of the transition arrangements and ensure continuity of service for the community.
“In the age of digital communication, a post office remains a critical service in remote areas and I recognise that,” Mr Kempton said.
“As the most populous island in the region, home to almost 2,800 residents, the post office plays a vital role as a community hub, allowing locals to pay bills, purchase stationery and access banking services,” he said.
“Access to core services such as postal services, education, health and is essential and I’m fought hard for the community to once again have a reliable mail service.”
Australia Post, General Manager Retail Operations North, Sarah Coe said was achieved through strong collaboration and shared effort.
“We’re proud to open a new, permanent Post Office for the Thursday Island community, ensuring local residents continue to have access to essential postal services.
“We appreciate the collaboration and support of the David Kempton Member for Cook, in working with us while we secured temporary arrangements that ensured continuity of service and progressed a long-term solution to meet the needs of the community. We also thank Mura Kosker for stepping up to support Australia Post during the transition.”
The Thursday Island Post Office temporarily closed at 5 pm on Thursday 26 March before reopening at its new location at 79 Douglas Street, Thursday Island.
